Alice Palmer
PAINTER | WOODBURN SPACE
I am a multidisciplinary artist with an approach to materiality and art-making that is grounded in the technical teachings of historical methods. I practice painting and drawing in the context of trained Realism, working exclusively from life in a methodology that traces its roots through European and American studios of the 1800’s.
This is a rare body of knowledge and I place my experimental work in context of this studied lineage. As my career emerges into contemporary art spaces I hope to continue to teach and share this unique body of knowledge within Australia.
I have a varied body of work that ranges from portraiture, landscape, still life and figurative painting (Kilgore Prize finalist, Manning Gallery Naked and Nude Finalist, Brett Whitely Travelling Scholarship Finalist) through to modernist print making, zine publication and graphically oriented fused glass sculpture. My practice is a highly intensive, all-encompassing experience that relies on meditative and meticulous painting states.
As a painter I create work largely from life, in an effort to translate optical experience through the lens of human consciousness, referring always to highly personal iconographic metaphor.
