Edward Inchbold
ARTIST, WATERLOO SPACE
Edward Inchbold is an Australian painter. Having cut his teeth on experimental arthouse films, Inchbold turned to painting in late 2020. Since then he has exhibited in group and solo shows, most recently at Saint Cloche with his solo exhibition The Cloud Cuts the Mountain. He has also been a finalist in several art prizes, including the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Awards.
Inchbold’s work is informed by the history of painting, personal history and the material itself - the oil paint. For each painting, over many months, he paints, scrapes back, paints over, scrapes again, over and over in pursuit of an image. He is primarily interested in a likeness of sensation. A likeness of a kind, but not one of literal representation.
Inchbold’s recent and ongoing series about the New England pitches the language of landscape painting against that of abstraction. By means of highly saturated colour and the sculptural layering of paint, Inchbold seeks to find an equivalent to the visual intensity of his experience.
Skills/expertise: Oil painting, abstract art
